Cooking Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag Style, A Show On OWN

OWN Network’s, Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag, is one of my favorite shows. This is’nt your typical cooking show; Anna & Kristina are NOT professional chefs. I love them because they actually Cook Like I do! You’ll see them make mistakes, laugh about it and keep on going. Some recipes turn out better than others, but there is always a whole lot of fun!

The main concept is that they showcase one cookbook and cook several Recipes From that cookbook in a set amount of time. Then, they have someone come and test what they made. Often the person coming is a Professional Chef. They always give Great Cooking tips and test out different kitchen equipment or ingredients. I have learned a lot by watching their show. At the end of the show they decide if the cookbook will get their A&K stamp of approval.

Using the Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag concept, my friend Jen and I decided to experiement! We included our children and husbands and made it a real family activity. We chose Jamie Oliver’s cookbook, Jamie’s Food Revolution because last spring both our families really enjoyed his show Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Jamie really inspired all of our kids so we thought that would be a Great Cookbook to test and really get the entire family involved.

This is how we chose our recipes:

Each family member picked a recipe that they thought looked good. Thanks to the many pictures it really helped the kids decide what to choose.

We put the kid’s four recipes in a hat and chose two, and we put the adult’s picks in a hat and chose two. This way we made sure that a few of the kids picks were actually recipes we were making.

Once we had our 4 recipes we decided if the recipe came From Your family you were responsible for getting the ingredients.

Here are the recipes:

       Parsnip and Ginger Soup

       Macaroni and Cauliflower Cheese Bake

       Chicken Tikka Masala

       Vanilla Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping

Like in the show, Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag, we had a set time. We started at 3:00pm and were hoping to be done by 6:30pm. Not really experiencing the pressure Anna and Kristina do on television, we didn’t want it to be too late because it was a school night. We finished cooking a little early around 6:15pm.

This was a lot of fun because I have never made a cheese cake! I would never have thought to make an Indian dish and wouldn’t have ever picked parsnip and ginger soup on anyday . . . Having someone to cook with really helped and encouraged me. Thank you, Anna and Kristina, for your pioneering example that cooking can be fun even if you make mistakes.

We sat down to a beautiful table and served each dish as a separate course. Our kids tried food they NEVER have before because they helped with preparation. They really enjoyed the soup and the macaroni and cauliflower cheese bake. The adults were shocked and delighted that the children ate the soup. The kids tikka masala was even something they thought was delicious considering no one has experienced authentic Indian cuisine before. The kids were a little disappointed in the vanilla cheesecake with raspberry topping because of its citrus taste. We all agreed the recipes were really good and relatively easy to make. We give Jamie’s Food Revolution cookbook our C&J stamp of approval!

A BIG thank you to OWN’s show Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag for inspiring our families to experience great cooking, togetherness in the kitchen, and awesome new foods!

BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes By Shirley O. Corriher

$29.99

Great day in the morning, BakeWise is out! You are holding the book that everyone has been waiting for. Sure enough, Shirley did not hold back — it’s all here. Lively and fascinating, BakeWise reads like a mystery novel as we follow sleuth Shirley while she solves everything from why cakes and muffins can be dry to génoise deflation and why the cookie crumbles.
With her years of experience from big-pot cooking for 140 teenage boys and her classic French culinary training to her work as a research biochemist at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Shirley manages to put two and two together in unique and exciting ways. Some information is straight out of Shirley’s wildly connecting brain cells. She describes useful techniques, such as brushing puff pastry with ice water — not just brushing off the flour — making the puff pastry easier to roll. The result? Higher, lighter, and flakier pastry. And you won’t find these recipes anywhere else, not even on the Internet. She can help you make moist cakes; flaky pie crusts; shrink-proof perfect meringues that won’t leak but still cut like a dream; big, crisp cream puffs; amazing French pastries; light génoise; and crusty, incredibly flavorful, open-textured French breads, such as baguettes and fougasses.
There is simply no one like Shirley Corriher. People everywhere recognize her from her TV appearances on the Food Network and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with Snoop Dogg as her fry chef.
Restaurant chefs and culinary students know her from their grease-splattered copies of CookWise, an encyclopedic work that has saved them from many a cooking disaster. With numerous “At-a-Glance” charts, BakeWise gives busy people information for quick problem solving. BakeWise also includes Shirley’s “What This Recipe Shows” in every recipe. Bobby Flay’s Boy Gets Grill: 125 Reasons to Light Your Fire! By Bobby Flay, Photographer John Dolan and Gentl & Hyers, with Julia Moskin

$30

Sequel to the bestselling Boy Meets Grill, Boy Gets Grill marks Bobby Flay’s return to the fire with his first grilling book in five years.
The connection between Flay and fire began when, as a kid growing up in New York City, Bobby learned to grill during trips to the Jersey Shore. As a young chef starting out, he always wanted to work the grill station, and when he opened his first restaurant in 1991, he called it Mesa Grill. The word grill was firmly hooked to his name. And then, the Food Network called.
Like his highly rated prime-time grilling show, Boy Gets Grill is set on a rooftop in Queens overlooking the Manhattan skyline and celebrates the explosive flavors of his hometown’s diverse neighborhoods. This is Bobby Flay’s New York, and everywhere he goes, there is great grilling: from Chinatown to Astoria, Queens (Greek food); Arthur Avenue in the Bronx (for old-style Italian); and lower Lexington Avenue (better known as Curry Hill, for Indian); and the flavors go on and on.
The question isn’t “Can I grill this?” but “Is there a reason not to grill this?” Usually the answer is “Go ahead and try it!” Throughout, Bobby gets more and more out of the grill, making life easier and encouraging everyone to think big, have fun, and get their hands dirty.
The grill is no longer for weekends only. The recipes in Boy Gets Grill are the quickest and easiest that Bobby has ever created, making the grill a perfect vehicle for busy weeknight meals. Flavors are (pleasantly) challenging. For the simplest of suppers, try Grilled Quesadillas with Sliced Steak, Blue Cheese, and Watercress; Grilled Shrimp with Triple Lemon Butter; Grilled Tuna with Red Chile, Allspice, and Orange Glaze; or a Pressed Cuban-Style Burger.
Boy Gets Grill is also full of great ideas for entertaining and enjoying the company of family and friends. In the “Big Parties” section, Bobby takes hosts and hostesses through every step of preparation for a Fis

He made a lot of money. He got caught.
But what happened next wasn’t the same old story: Jeff changed. He found a passion in prison kitchens and taught himself to cook. Once released, he talked his way into a series of professional kitchens — almost always having to prove himself by starting as a dishwasher or line cook. His talent was obvious; his work ethic even more so. After rising to the top of the kitchen in some of Los Angeles’s best restaurants, he became the first African American Chef de Cuisine in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace and then executive chef at Café Bellagio in the prestigious Bellagio Resort.
Now Jeff shows theworld his food and it is delicious. What inspires him? Foods he ate as a child — Half-pound “Back-in-the-Day” Chili Cheeseburger, Turkey Smoked Collard Greens, Friendly Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Smoked Cheddar Cheese, Cakelike Cornbread with Maple Butter, and Chocolate S’more Bread Pudding — are here as well as the more elegant, celebratory cuisine he developed as a chef — Sweet Potato Soup, Barbecued Shrimp Scampi, and slow-cookedMolasses Braised Beef Short Ribs. Cooks will also find lots of great recipes for the grill and plenty of party foods, satisfying salads, quick breads, sides, soups, sweet endings, and more.
Featuring over 150 recipes, stunning full-color photographs, tips and techniques, as well as personal outtakes and anecdotes from Chef Jeff’s life on the streets, the prison kitchen, and hiswork as a chef andmotivational speaker, this is much more than a cookbook — it is a larger-than-life American success story and the recipe for how Chef Jeff fulfilled his dream.

Hi, y’all!
This book is my proudest achievement so far, and I just have to tell y’all why I am so excited about it. It’s a book of classic dishes, dedicated to a whole new generation of cooks—for every bride, graduate, and anyone who has a love of a great Southern meal. My family is growing and expanding all the time. We’re blessed with marriages and grandbabies, and so sharing these recipes for honest, down-home dishes feels like passing a generation’s worth of stovetop secrets on to my family, and yours.
I’ve been cooking and eating Southern food my whole life, and I can tell you that every meal you make from this book will be a mouthful of our one-of-akind spirit and traditions. These recipes showcase the diversity and ingenuity of Southern cuisine, from Cajun to Low-Country and beyond, highlighting the deep cultural richness of our gumbos and collards, our barbecues and pies. You may remember a few beloved classics from The Lady & Sons, but nearly all of these recipes are brand-new—and I think you’ll find that they are all mouthwateringly delicious. It is, without a doubt, a true Southern cooking bible.
I sincerely hope that this book will take its place in your kitchen for many years to come, as I know it will in mine. Rocco's Five Minute Flavor: Fabulous Meals with 5 Ingredients in 5 Minutes By Rocco DiSpirito

Rocco’s Five Minute Flavor: Fabulous Meals with 5 Ingredients in 5 Minutes By Rocco DiSpirito

$11.99

Rocco DiSpirito blasts through the rash of meals-in-30-minutes cookbooks with a revolutionary book sure to rock kitchens across America.
In Rocco’s 5 Minute Flavor, every dish is ready in 5 minutes or less, using 5 ingredients, and all for under $5 per serving. This is fast food with all of Rocco’s celebrated expertise with flavor; food that no one will believe didn’t take hours of work.
A James Beard Award, two restaurants, a network television show, and two cookbooks into his profession, Rocco left the day-to-day restaurant business after a long career and many, many hours behind the stove. He asked himself, “Can a chef find happiness in New York City without a restaurant?” The answer is yes.
Rocco began exploring the good life, having dinner parties at home and cooking for himself, instead of chomping down leftovers at 2 A.M. He discovered the keys to liberating the busy home cook: shop smart, keep a few key pantry items on hand, and get the most out of your stove — cooking over high heat is the secret to meals in 5 minutes.
<Rocco’s 5 Minute Flavor includes recipes for appetizers, fondues, salads, soups, sandwiches, panini, sides, vegetarian main dishes, and main dishes of noodles, pasta, fish, shellfish, poultry, pork, beef, duck, and lamb. And desserts, of course. Rocco recommends his favorite high-quality, fresh prepared foods that are available in virtually every supermarket anywhere. He stocks the pantry with a few basic ingredients — salt and pepper, sugar, vinegar, fat, and flour — and uses only 5 other ingredients in each of the 175 recipes, from Firecracker Shrimp and Eggplant Parmigiano to Salmon with Shiitake Mushrooms in Ginger-Soy Broth and Chicken with Lemon, Capers, and Red Onions.
In addition, Rocco suggests menus for a range of events, from a simple gathering with friends to a lush holiday celebration; provides a short list (five items to be exact) of key kitchen equipment; and offers other tip
